Tropical Storm Debby - Untreated Wastewater




FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE


Butner, NC. August 12, 2024 — This is an official notice from the South Granville Water and Sewer Authority (SGWASA). General Statute 143-215.1C requires that the owner or operator of any wastewater collection or treatment works to issue a press release when an untreated wastewater discharge of 1,000 gallons or more reaches surface waters.

In accordance with that regulation, the following news release has been prepared and issued to media in Granville County. Due to the heavy rainfall event from tropical storm Debbie that occurred between 8/8/24 and 8/10/24, the South Granville Water and Sewer Authority experienced a discharge of untreated wastewater on 8/8/24 amounting to 9,600 gallons at 1230 E. Middleton Dr., in Butner, NC. 


The untreated wastewater was discharged into an unnamed tributary of Ledge Creek in the Neuse River Basin.  Additionally, the South Granville Water and Sewer Authority experienced a discharge of untreated wastewater on 8/8/24 amounting to 4,800 gallons at 1917 West B. Street, in Butner, NC.  The untreated wastewater was discharged into an unnamed tributary of Picture Creek of the Nuese River Basin.


The North Carolina Division of Water Resources was notified of the event on 8/9/24 and is reviewing the matter.  For more information contact SGWASA at 919-575-3367.
