Understanding Iron, Manganese, and Water Quality

At SGWASA, ensuring quality water is our top priority. Recently, higher manganese levels were detected in areas of our service region. We want to take this opportunity not only to provide an update, but also discuss what is happening, why it matters, and what actions are being taken by SGWASA to manage and balance these levels.

This post will walk you through key terms, recent findings, and the steps being taken to address the issue.

Based on current localized data, there is no indication of an issue at the water treatment plant.

All recent test results remain within the regulatory limits set by the NCDEQ and the EPA.

Our staff is in the process of performing additional water quality tests for iron and manganese throughout the SGWASA service area to better determine whether these recent increases are localized or regional.

At this time, all water provided by SGWASA is within the Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) established by both the NCDEQ and the EPA. While current data does not indicate a need for alternative drinking water, SGWASA is committed to long-term system resiliency and continuous improvement.

Our teams are working with a contracted engineering firm to develop a comprehensive and structured flushing program.

A naturally occurring mineral found in rocks and soil. In water, it can cause discoloration and taste issues, but is not considered a health threat at typical levels.

Increased Testing

SGWASA is currently expanding water testing across our entire service area to determine if this is an isolated issue or system-wide.

System Flushing

Crews conducted hydrant flushing processes in affected areas to help remove any buildup and restore clarity.

Water Quality Consultation

We are working with a certified water quality consultant to trace the cause and develop both short-term corrective actions and long-term preventive strategies.

Infrastructure Improvements

Engineering teams are updating SGWASA's system model, training staff in hydrant flushing techniques, and preparing for long-term infrastructure investments
