The SGWASA PFAS Pilot Mitigation Program was initiated to reduce the concentrations of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in finished water to levels below the new regulatory limits.
The program began with sample studies conducted by a partnering environmental firm to research the PFAS concentration levels in SGWASA's raw water source. Currently, a pilot study is being conducted to determine the appropriate mitigation process for the South Granville Water & Sewer Authorty.
This pilot study will identify and test effective treatment solutions for PFAS removal while evaluating potential methods for addressing a range of other emerging contaminants.
Treatment alternatives for PFAS removal:
-
Granular Activated Carbon (GAC)
-
Anion Exchange Resin (AER)
-
Novel Sorbents (NS)
-
Reverse Osmosis (RO)
Trial of these technologies will help to inform the Authority in future treatment strategies.
The PFAS Mitigation Program testing site plays a crucial role in monitoring and addressing PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) contamination. As part of SGWASA's ongoing commitment to public health and environmental safety, the site conducts thorough testing and analysis to detect and mitigate these harmful chemicals in local water sources.
At September 13, 2022, Board of Directors meeting, representatives DavidBriley, PE, and Alex Domrzalski, PE, from Hazen provided a presentation entitled: PFAS,What is it? The presentation provided the Board members and the public the opportunity to learn more about PFAS.
