Explore SGWASA's centralized repository of terms, information, and processes related to water and sewer systems below.

PFOS - Perfluorooctane Sulfonic Acid

A type of PFAS that has been used in manufacturing.

PFOS is a carbon chain of eight carbons with fluorine atoms attached to all of them, and a carboxylic acid group (-COOH) at one end.

PFP - Polyfluoroalkyl Phosphate

A type of PFAS found in firefighting foams and other products.

PFP is a carbon chain of three carbons with fluorine atoms attached to all of them, and a carboxylic acid group (-COOH) at one end.

Potable Water

Potable water is defined as water that is suitable for human consumption.

Primary Treatment

The initial phase of wastewater treatment, which removes large solids and grit.

Reclaimed Water

Wastewater that has been treated and reused for non-potable purposes, such as irrigation.

Resident Project Representative (RPR)

An RPR (Resident Project Representative) is the go-to person on site, making sure daily construction operations align with the contract documents and construction plans. This individual is present to catch any potential issues early on and, whenever possible, prevent construction defects or deficiencies from popping up.

Safe Water

Safe water is defined as water meeting drinking water quality standards.

Sanitary Flow Reduction

Sanitary Flow Reduction refers to efforts to reduce the amount of wastewater that enters the sewer system. This can be achieved through various methods, such as fixing leaks, repairing faulty plumbing, and educating the public about proper wastewater disposal. Reducing sanitary flow can help prevent sewer overflows and improve the overall health of the sewer system.

Secondary Treatment

The second phase of wastewater treatment, which removes organic matter.

Sedimentation

The process of allowing suspended particles in water to settle to the bottom.

Service Line

The pipe that connects your home to the water main. This is often a private line, meaning the homeowner is responsible for its maintenance and repair.

Settlement

Gravitational settling is, as has been noted, one of the most efficient means of separating solids from surrounding liquid.
