During construction, there will be several key changes and activities that residents and commuters should anticipate:

  1. Lane Closures & Reduced Lanes: Expect occasional lane closures, both on and off ramps, to facilitate work zones. There may be reduced lanes, especially during off-peak hours, leading to temporary changes in traffic patterns. Delays are possible, so it’s important to plan ahead.

  2. Traffic Shifts & Detours: Temporary traffic shifts and detours may be in place to ensure the safety of both workers and drivers. Drivers may be redirected to alternate routes or bypass lanes during specific phases of construction.

  3. Increased Construction Traffic: Expect heavier construction vehicle activity on and around the interstate, especially during peak construction times. These vehicles may enter and exit the highway, causing brief disruptions.

  4. Noise & Construction Equipment: Due to the nature of the work, there will be noticeable noise from construction machinery such as bulldozers, cranes, and paving equipment. This may also include nighttime work to minimize daytime traffic impacts.

  5. Signage & Traffic Management: Keep an eye out for new signage that provides real-time updates on traffic changes, detours, and safety measures. Variable message signs (VMS) will offer important reminders of road conditions and lane usage.

  6. Work Zone Safety: Workers will be actively involved in roadwork, including paving, barrier installation, and bridge repairs. Be cautious around work zones, adhere to speed limits, and watch for changes in lane configurations.

  7. Project Timeline & Phasing: The project will be phased, meaning certain sections of I-85 may undergo construction at different times. The project is expected to take several months, with work potentially taking place in stages to minimize disruptions.

  8. Access to Exits and Interchanges: Some interchanges may be temporarily closed or rerouted to accommodate work on ramps or bridges. Updated exit information and alternative routes will be posted to guide travelers safely around construction zones.

  9. Potential for Delays: Due to the complexity of the project, occasional delays are to be expected. Travelers should stay informed of expected work zones and any changes by checking construction updates or using real-time navigation apps.
